The Shimer Civic Humanities Project began in the summer of 2023 with the purpose of providing high school seniors—known as Freedom Scholars—with an early opportunity to experience an undergraduate-level education similar to what they’d find on a college campus. We welcomed 19 Freedom Scholars (the “Original 19”) on campus to great success and hope to continue the Program this coming summer.
Those participating this summer will explore texts from both classic authors and contemporary voices that challenge ideas in traditional literature. As part of the CHP, the Freedom Scholars will then have the chance to apply what they’ve learned by carrying out engagement efforts based on their experiences within their own home communities.
Two of the “Original 19” shared their experiences from the CHP in recent Shimer Monthly Bulletins (Edward Zavala, October; and Aishat Balogun, February). We are encouraging gifts towards the CHP as one of Shimer’s top priorities for the Day of Giving to ensure that this vital and important program may continue this summer and beyond. Our goal is to raise $8,000 towards this effort!
