Hear from History Major, Sophia Fischer!
Hi! I’m Sophia Fischer, a sophomore here at North Central College. I am the history department's student worker as well as the President of our history club. I set up events for students here at the school to discuss and indulge themselves in all things’ history. Things like historical movie nights, history quiz games, pizza with the professors and so much more! In the history department, I help our professors' lives move a little smoother by making copies, creating posters for upcoming events, and spreading the word about the courses we offer here. I am a history and secondary education major and plan on teaching in a high school once I graduate. My specialty is the 1960s and studying the social history of that time. My dream is to be able to teach a U.S. History class focusing solely on the social and political movements of the 1940s to today and the behaviors of humans during that time. I am doing undergraduate research on the 1960s and the social/political activists during the time that studied the power of drugs, activists like Timothy Leary, Jerry Rubin, Rosemary Woodruff, and Abbie Hoffman. I am very excited to be so involved in our history department and am very passionate about the work that I do.
About the Department
Our dedicated faculty engage with students to study history and broaden their understanding of specific geographical regions as they develop a deeper perspective on global events and how political, economic, intellectual, cultural and social forces shape civilizations from age to age.
Courses offered on the history of the United States, Europe, Asia, Latin America and Africa, as well as courses on local history, western civilization and global history allow students to:
• Explore careers in museums, archives, and public history through classes and internships at Naper Settlement or the Museums at Cantigny Park.
• Do original historical research in consultation with our faculty on topics ranging from local history and Chicago history to Early Modern Europe, British imperialism, and East Asia.
• Take a wide variety of classes in World, U.S., and Illinois history and in the social sciences in order to become a high school Social Studies teacher.
• Study abroad at colleges and universities all over the world.
Our faculty strive to provide students with a strong foundation for graduate studies, professions such as law and teaching, or careers in museums and public history.
